Formula 1 is a world full of secrets. Strategies shouldn't be immediately deciphered by the competition. McLaren is using a formula in Spielberg that, at first glance, seems mysterious. Lando Norris doesn't want to reveal anything, but then his team boss clarifies the situation.

"Germany situation." This mysterious-sounding term suddenly appeared in a radio message from McLaren during the Formula 1 race in Austria. Lando Norris's race engineer, Will Joseph, used this enigmatic phrase during the Spielberg Grand Prix after a pit stop by Oscar Piastri. "It's a secret," said Norris when asked what this code stood for. The Englishman, who narrowly won the race ahead of his teammate Piastri, was reluctant to reveal the exact meaning.

His team boss, Andrea Stella, then took over. This coded strategy announcement, he told the TV channel Sky, goes back to a situation in a race a few years ago. Back then, reportedly in Germany, they wanted to catch the right moment to have the right timing for the pit stop before the tires deteriorated too much. "The 'Germany situation' describes exactly that," Stella continued. What initially sounded so mysterious wasn't particularly cryptic after all.

Norris made a major comeback in the title fight in Austria. Two weeks after his team-wide collision in Canada, the Briton was back in top form in Styria, withstanding Piastri's intense pressure with flying colors. After the race, he climbed out of his car, drenched in sweat. "It was tough, it was very hot," Norris said, "but it was a great battle with Oscar. For me, it was both stressful and fun."

He enjoyed the champagne shower on the top step of the podium for the third time this season and gained important ground on Piastri with the win, now trailing the leader by just 15 points instead of 22. The Briton had been faster than his teammate all weekend.
